5-4-Friday… 5 hard shots
I was struggling for inspiration, and time, to think up a subject for this week’s 5-4. And then, driving home from work on Tuesday, Talksport’s Matt Holland said he believed that Bayern Munich’s Jerome Boateng, subject of an alleged transfer bid from Barcelona,...
5-4-Friday… 5 transfer window things
Who says that men can’t multi-task, eh? Right here, before your very eyes, is a blog with a dual-purpose. The new football season is almost upon us and so it is time to wheel out my (soon to be) regular football blog, “View From The West”, which charts my sporadic...
5-4-Friday… 5 prediction things
Here’s a 5-4-Friday with a bit of a difference this week. As many of you will know, I recently ran a Prediction competition for the World Cup in Brazil. It is starting to become but a distant memory, but we made a great effort in raising almost £150 for Joseph’s Goal....
5-4-Friday… 5 Kitchen Things
Admittedly, I don’t spend that much time in our kitchen. After about ten o’clock at night it’s virtually out of bounds as both access doors are slammed firmly shut so that the cats can be kept from roaming about the house. They can, of course, leave via the cat flap...
5-4-Friday… 5 End of Term Things
Traditionally, the beginning of July marks two things; the start and end of the British summer and an unending series of mind-numbingly dull end of term events at your kid’s school. Many parents don’t bother to attend these events but I do because a) I’m an absolutely...
5-4-Friday… 5 World Cup Things Week 3
Three weeks into the World Cup and, despite some entertaining games, it is still events around the edge of the actual football that are grabbing my attention. Also, if you ever have a bright idea about running a Prediction League for the World Cup, try to resist the...
5-4-Friday… World Cup Week 2 things
Running a Prediction League competition for the World Cup, in addition to trying to hold down a proper job, has left me with very little time to do actually watch many of the matches. In fact, it has left me with very little time to do anything at all. So, this week’s...
5-4-Friday… 5 World Cup Week 1 things
I do try to be topical with my 5-4-Friday subjects and I therefore make no apology that the World Cup in Brazil will feature heavily over the coming weeks. After all, like most people, there really isn’t time for too much else at the moment. Life during this festival...
5-4-Friday… 5 World Cup memories #2
Last week, I wrote about the stand-out moments from the first five World Cup finals that I remember, namely those from 1974 through to 1990. Despite the latest of those being twenty-four years ago, I can still recall many of the incidents vividly. It is the same with...
5-4-Friday… 5 World Cup memories #1
We are just shy of a week away from the start of the latest instalment of the greatest sporting show on earth…. The FIFA World Cup. Like it or not, association football is the most popular sport in the world and, for its Blue Riband tournament, the whole world tunes...
For as long as I can remember, certainly since the advent of email, the end of the working week has always been marked by someone circulating a joke, or an amusing picture or article – the Friday Funny, as it became known. I have now evolved this into a regular blog that I call 5-4-Friday, a light-hearted list of 5 favourite things or 5 pet hates ideally related to some burning issue of the day or week.
View From the West is a regular football-based blog with the subject matter normally focusing on events at the club I support, Wigan Athletic, as I see them unfold from my vantage point in the West Stand of the DW Stadium. For non-Wigan fans, wider football issues and talking points will also be given an airing. For a bit of fun, I will scour social and digital media and various fan forums to identify a Hit of the Week, a Miss of the Week and a Pic of the Week.
54T is an occasional variation on 5-4-Friday in which a friend of the site, a minor celebrity (or, god-willing, if it takes off, a not-so-minor celebrity) will tell us which four famous people they would invite round to share a Friday evening chippy tea. We will learn what they would feed them, what drinks would be chilling in the fridge and, when the stimulating conversation dries up, what music they would listen to, what films would they stick in the DVD player and what entertaining games they would play.
3in! is a friendly football prediction competition that has been running for around twelve years now. Participants have to predict the outcome of just three fixtures from the weekend’s football programme with bigger rewards available the more off-the-wall you are prepared to go. It’s my type of gambling – all hypothetical, no real money involved. All the news for the 3in! players can be found on Chris Griffin Says…
Dream League is now beyond its 30th year. It is a fantasy football competition with a difference. Each of the 16 Owners (who should be old enough to know better) buys a squad of players and pits their team against the other 15 Owners in a traditional, home and away league season. Goals your players score are netted off against goals your defenders concede. Out-perform your opponent in the week and you win. Simples! Again, all the up to date news can be found here.
