5-4-Friday… 5 Marvel Characters

I may have mentioned this once or twice recently, but my 9-year old son – Alex – is currently obsessed with the Marvel franchise. No, not the people who make powdered milk, rather the media company responsible for the creation of countless magazines, cartoons and...

5-4-Friday… 5 Wigan Fan Moans

This week, and this is by no means an uncommon occurrence, I have been having a lively, reasonably good-natured fall out with some of my fellow Wigan Athletic fans on various social media and on the Latics’ message boards.  The world of the message boards in...

5-4-Friday… 5 Mario Kart Courses

It’s an occupational hazard, but sometimes you have to humour your kids and play the games that they want to play in the name of keeping them entertained in school holidays and during wet weekends.  If you are the father of a daughter this can turn out to be a...

5-4-Friday… 5 Football Animals

Hull City supporters have been arguing for with their chairman over his desire to change the club’s name from Hull City to Hull Tigers. He wants to do this because he thinks it will enhance the club’s commercial opportunities, particularly in the Far Eastern markets....

5-4-Nowt… 5 Creosote issues

I stained, intentionally, four 6'x5' garden fence panels this week. Unintentionally, I also stained in a fetching green colour: 1. Approximately 1% of my sand coloured (not green) patio.  2. The other side (brown) of the fence that belongs to our next door neighbour ...

5-4-Friday… 5 Wigan Athletic Turn-ups

Being a Wigan Athletic fan has never been easy.  I’m sure fans of every other team think the same about their team, but they’re wrong; it’s a proper nightmare, supporting Wigan Athletic. For example, right from the start, from the club’s non-league days, fans of the...

5-4-Friday… 5 TV Series

After getting on for seventeen months of 5-4-Friday, I have been quite impressed with my ability to think up a vaguely topical theme each week. It has sometimes been a struggle to dream up an idea and I have been grateful to friends and/or readers for suggesting a...

5-4-Friday… 5 non-sports

The Winter Olympics has just finished, with its collection of wintry and bizarre sports, and it got me thinking about what constitutes a sport. There were people sliding down a hill on a tea tray, people not sliding down a hill at all, but walking very quickly on skis...

5-4-Nowt… 5 unplanned birthday things

Here are five things I hadn't expected to happen, and have to deal with, on my birthday today. 1. Smash the last spare kitchen spot bulb AND break the light fitting in the en suite.  2. Make a failed trip to the local DIY shop. 3. Make a failed trip to Homebase. 4....

5-4-Nowt… 5 day off things

It's a cheeky day off today before embarking on a short weekend away in Brighton to watch the football. 5 day off things - some planned, others not - I have noticed, are: 1. No 0535 alarm call 2. No "Full English" whilst reading emails 3. Full roast chicken for lunch...

54F-square-orig_75x75For as long as I can remember, certainly since the advent of email, the end of the working week has always been marked by someone circulating a joke, or an amusing picture or article – the Friday Funny, as it became known. I have now evolved this into a regular blog that I call 5-4-Friday, a light-hearted list of 5 favourite things or 5 pet hates ideally related to some burning issue of the day or week.

vftw_square_75x75View From the West is a regular football-based blog with the subject matter normally focusing on events at the club I support, Wigan Athletic, as I see them unfold from my vantage point in the West Stand of the DW Stadium. For non-Wigan fans, wider football issues and talking points will also be given an airing. For a bit of fun, I will scour social and digital media and various fan forums to identify a Hit of the Week, a Miss of the Week and a Pic of the Week.

54T-square-orig_clipped_75x7554T is an occasional variation on 5-4-Friday in which a friend of the site, a minor celebrity (or, god-willing, if it takes off, a not-so-minor celebrity) will tell us which four famous people they would invite round to share a Friday evening chippy tea. We will learn what they would feed them, what drinks would be chilling in the fridge and, when the stimulating conversation dries up, what music they would listen to, what films would they stick in the DVD player and what entertaining games they would play.

predictionleague_clipped_75x753in! is a friendly football prediction competition that has been running for around twelve years now. Participants have to predict the outcome of just three fixtures from the weekend’s football programme with bigger rewards available the more off-the-wall you are prepared to go. It’s my type of gambling – all hypothetical, no real money involved. All the news for the 3in! players can be found on Chris Griffin Says…

dreamleague_blue_original_75x75Dream League is now beyond its 30th year. It is a fantasy football competition with a difference. Each of the 16 Owners (who should be old enough to know better) buys a squad of players and pits their team against the other 15 Owners in a traditional, home and away league season. Goals your players score are netted off against goals your defenders concede. Out-perform your opponent in the week and you win. Simples! Again, all the up to date news can be found here.

griff_clipped_250X150I hope you enjoy the site.
