5-4-Friday… 5 English Fails
Most countries have something which they probably feel defines them as a nation or a people. Something that the rest of the world recognises as being home to that particular country. Many nationalities can lay claim to something that they are particularly renowned...
5-4-Friday… 5 New Martians
Renowned writers like Jules Verne and HG Wells told classic tales of intrepid time travel and adventure that have stood the test of time. I am quite sure that, despite their vivid and creative imaginations, they never expected their fictional yearns to actually come...
5-4-Friday… 5 false dawns
I wrote last week that the football transfer window is usually an opportunity for Wigan Athletic to rectify mistakes made in previous transfer windows. This year was definitely no exception as the Latics laid on a shuttle bus from Manchester Airport to the DW Stadium...
5-4-Friday… 5 Deadline Day things
Football’s Transfer Deadline Day. What a palaver! It happens twice every year, once in August and once in January, and is fast becoming an integral, landmark day in the footballing diary. A bit like FA Cup 3rd round day or the Boxing Day fixtures or Cup Final It’s A...
7-4-Friday… 7 random me things
I see Facebookers have been at it again this week. Clearly getting people to post their first ever profile picture, tell us their all-time favourite things beginning with the letter ‘D’ and confirming that they love their sons, daughters, mums, aunties and hamsters...
5-4-Friday… 5 winter whines
There’s no denying that us Brits are obsessed with the weather. Maybe it’s living on island that makes us this way, maybe it’s the fact that we can get literally experience all four seasons in a single day or, more likely, it’s simply because we are a nation of...
5-4-Friday… 5 Facebook Whines
Some people don’t like Facebook, but I do. It provides a perfect opportunity to keep in touch with friends and family who you don’t manage to see on a regular basis. You can see what they’re up to, see if they’ve been piling on the pounds lately and generally catch up...
Five players that have lit up the Premier League this season
Although Wigan may well be a million miles away from reaching the promised land of the Premier League any time in the near future, it really has been a pleasure this season to see some of the finest footballers on the planet competing in our country. Spain,...
Who do Wigan need to bring in to bolster their ranks in 2015?
Now is probably the moment Malky Mackay has been waiting for since he was appointed Wigan manager in November – the January transfer window. Things certainly haven’t gone to plan since Mackay replaced Uwe Rosler. Just one win from eight games in all...
5-4-Friday… 5 Pilloried Footballers
I found myself in the rather unusual position this week of defending a Liverpool FC player. Not only that, but the player in question is Steven Gerrard – sorry, Stevie Geeee, as we’re supposed to call him – and he isn’t someone I particularly like. Mind you, like most...
For as long as I can remember, certainly since the advent of email, the end of the working week has always been marked by someone circulating a joke, or an amusing picture or article – the Friday Funny, as it became known. I have now evolved this into a regular blog that I call 5-4-Friday, a light-hearted list of 5 favourite things or 5 pet hates ideally related to some burning issue of the day or week.
View From the West is a regular football-based blog with the subject matter normally focusing on events at the club I support, Wigan Athletic, as I see them unfold from my vantage point in the West Stand of the DW Stadium. For non-Wigan fans, wider football issues and talking points will also be given an airing. For a bit of fun, I will scour social and digital media and various fan forums to identify a Hit of the Week, a Miss of the Week and a Pic of the Week.
54T is an occasional variation on 5-4-Friday in which a friend of the site, a minor celebrity (or, god-willing, if it takes off, a not-so-minor celebrity) will tell us which four famous people they would invite round to share a Friday evening chippy tea. We will learn what they would feed them, what drinks would be chilling in the fridge and, when the stimulating conversation dries up, what music they would listen to, what films would they stick in the DVD player and what entertaining games they would play.
3in! is a friendly football prediction competition that has been running for around twelve years now. Participants have to predict the outcome of just three fixtures from the weekend’s football programme with bigger rewards available the more off-the-wall you are prepared to go. It’s my type of gambling – all hypothetical, no real money involved. All the news for the 3in! players can be found on Chris Griffin Says…
Dream League is now beyond its 30th year. It is a fantasy football competition with a difference. Each of the 16 Owners (who should be old enough to know better) buys a squad of players and pits their team against the other 15 Owners in a traditional, home and away league season. Goals your players score are netted off against goals your defenders concede. Out-perform your opponent in the week and you win. Simples! Again, all the up to date news can be found here.
