5-4-Friday… 5 hotel whinges
5-4-Friday has been away for a while but I am going to ease myself gently back into it with a quick blog based on my week working away down south. I am going to specifically list my “5 Hotel Whinges”… five things I have only really noticed for the first time this...
5-4-Friday… 5 Cycling Things
I have a road bike. I cycle. There, I’ve said it. To be fair, I like to think that I’m not one of those bike bores who only jumped on the bandwagon after Bradley Wiggins and 2012 Olympics. That said, in the six years hat I’ve had the bike, it has spent more time in...
5-4-Friday… 5 pool gripes
A lot of people moan about a lot of things, don’t they? Things that don’t really matter. And really, they shouldn’t. Not when there are people sleeping on the streets, eating at food banks, being bombed out of their homes or having to watch Bolton Wanderers every...
5-4-Friday… 5 Euro 2016 Week 1 things
Most of my spare time since the Euro 2016 tournament started this time last week has been taken up administering the score predictions of the 128 members of the Prediction League in aid of the Home Instead Senior Care Bring Joy Foundation. However, I think I can spare...
5-4-Friday… 5 Euro 2016 predictions
So, the latest football season ends with Wigan Athletic winning a league, Leicester City winning the league, Liverpool winning nothing and a bomb scare forcing a Manchester United game to be called off. Pretty standard fare, I suppose. The end of an extraordinary...
5-4-Friday… 5 summer signs
Social media is full of people expressing their hate for this country at the moment. There are people on the left having a pop at the right and how they are ripping us all off and those on the right moaning that we are letting in too many free-loading foreigners....
5-4-Friday… 5 celebrity deaths
People get awfully touchy about death, don’t you think? You’re not really allowed to laugh or make jokes about it and, let’s face it, it’s no laughing matter. My granny used to say “there’s folk dying who’ve never died before” and that was as close to being...
Euro 2016/Bring Joy Foundation
Anyone who took part in the 2014 FIFA World Cup Prediction competition will recall that we offered a huge £400+ in prize money whilst raising £100+ for charity at the same time. We will be running another competition this summer for the Euro 2016 football tournament...
5-4-Friday… 5 grammar things
I went to the fridge at work to liberate some ham for my lunch the other day. I was really looking forward to it but when I got there it had gone. Apparently, as it was approaching its "use by" date, a colleague had thoughtfully taken it to the local food bank. As I...
VFTW/5-4-Friday… 5 players of the year
As I write this, the day before they play Coventry City at home, Wigan Athletic have just six games to go until the end of the season. And what a season it’s been, too. Off the field it has been a fantastically enjoyable one. We’ve had some monumental away trips, the...
For as long as I can remember, certainly since the advent of email, the end of the working week has always been marked by someone circulating a joke, or an amusing picture or article – the Friday Funny, as it became known. I have now evolved this into a regular blog that I call 5-4-Friday, a light-hearted list of 5 favourite things or 5 pet hates ideally related to some burning issue of the day or week.
View From the West is a regular football-based blog with the subject matter normally focusing on events at the club I support, Wigan Athletic, as I see them unfold from my vantage point in the West Stand of the DW Stadium. For non-Wigan fans, wider football issues and talking points will also be given an airing. For a bit of fun, I will scour social and digital media and various fan forums to identify a Hit of the Week, a Miss of the Week and a Pic of the Week.
54T is an occasional variation on 5-4-Friday in which a friend of the site, a minor celebrity (or, god-willing, if it takes off, a not-so-minor celebrity) will tell us which four famous people they would invite round to share a Friday evening chippy tea. We will learn what they would feed them, what drinks would be chilling in the fridge and, when the stimulating conversation dries up, what music they would listen to, what films would they stick in the DVD player and what entertaining games they would play.
3in! is a friendly football prediction competition that has been running for around twelve years now. Participants have to predict the outcome of just three fixtures from the weekend’s football programme with bigger rewards available the more off-the-wall you are prepared to go. It’s my type of gambling – all hypothetical, no real money involved. All the news for the 3in! players can be found on Chris Griffin Says…
Dream League is now beyond its 30th year. It is a fantasy football competition with a difference. Each of the 16 Owners (who should be old enough to know better) buys a squad of players and pits their team against the other 15 Owners in a traditional, home and away league season. Goals your players score are netted off against goals your defenders concede. Out-perform your opponent in the week and you win. Simples! Again, all the up to date news can be found here.
